KERNIT Documentation

Markdown Input

Markdown input remains available for formatter legacy workflows. For existing Word manuscripts, start with the Hyperlinker instead.

When Markdown Helps#

Use Markdown when your manuscript starts as structured text and you want KERNIT to create a formatted output file. Markdown is not required for the DOCX Hyperlinker; Hyperlinker works directly on Word files.

Use Markdown whenUse DOCX upload when
You are drafting from plain structured text. The manuscript already exists as a Word file.
You want KERNIT formatter output first. You need citation and cross-reference links in the current DOCX.
The team controls the source text. The team receives manuscripts from many authors.
  1. Convert Markdown to the required export format.
  2. Inspect headings, captions, equations, references, and tables in the exported file.
  3. If the final deliverable is DOCX, run Hyperlinker scan on that DOCX.
  4. Review and apply links only after the layout is stable.
For citation and cross-reference linking, use DOCX Hyperlinker. For formatting from source text, use the formatter-era export pages under Export Formats.
